About
Dr. James M. Owston is the Dean of Distance Learning and an Associate Professor in Communication and Media at Mountain State University in Beckley, West Virginia, USA.
He has been with the institution since 1991 and full-time since 1994. Having served in a number of capacities, Owston has been involved in online learning since 1997 when he developed the institution's first online courses. Additionally, he taught for Marshall University (1978-1980) and West Virginia State University (1993-1994).
EDUCATION:
Doctorate of Education (EdD), 2007; Marshall University in Leadership Studies and a minor in Media.
Education Specialist (EdS), 1999; Marshall University in Leadership Studies.
Master of Arts (MA), 1992; West Virginia University in Communication Studies and a minor in Film.
Master of Arts (MA), 1991; Marshall University in Humanities with concentrations in Media and History.
Bachelor of Theology (BTh), 1978; Kentucky Christian University in Bible with minors in communication and language (Greek & Hebrew).
Bachelor of Arts (AB), 1977; Kentucky Christian University in Bible with minors in communication and Greek.
Bachelor of Science (BS), 2003; Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Management of Information Systems.
Bachelor of Science (BS), 2003; Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Communication and Broadcasting.
He has taken additional coursework from UCLA, Marshall, WVU, and Mississippi State University.
In 2005, he became a Senior Certified WebCT/Blackboard Trainer and in 2006 a Certified Blackboard CE/Vista Product Specialist.
AWARDS:
2008 Leo & Margaret Goodman-Malamuth Outstanding Dissertation winner for Research in Higher Educational Adminstration, American Association of University Administrators.
2009 Alice L. Beeman Outstanding Dissertation winner for Outstanding Research in Communications and Marketing for Educational Advancement, Council for the Advancement and Support of Educational Advancement.
